The seal

Notary Public, in the same office as the policy

Identity verification and witnessing of signatures for affidavits, deeds, and power of attorney forms, finished with the official notary seal.

What a notary actually does with your document

A notary does not read your document or tell you whether to sign it. The job is narrower and it matters: confirming that the person signing is who they say they are, watching them sign it, and applying an official seal that says so. That is what makes an affidavit, a deed or a power of attorney form usable by a court, a county recorder or a bank. Bring the document unsigned, bring current photo identification, and sign it at the counter rather than before you arrive.

Why it is worth doing here rather than somewhere else

A California notary commission is held in this office, and the commission certificate hangs on the wall with the California Department of Insurance licence and the Secretary of State filing. Most people who need something notarised are already partway through some other piece of paperwork, and it is usually the registration, the policy or the shipping form sitting at the next desk along.
